Not Like The Cool Kids

June 3, 2015 by Mariah 35 Comments

Not Like The Cool Kids

I figured I should get this post up while the song is still popular. The fact that Iโ€™m using for a blog post probably means itโ€™s already not popular. I do love this song (popular or not), itโ€™s so catchy.

Enough about my choice in music ๐Ÿ™‚ Letโ€™s move onto the other things that make me not like the cool kids.

I do not like Starbucks. If Iโ€™m on vacation or home I want an independent coffee shop. If you ever see me post a Starbucks picture, itโ€™s a signal Iโ€™m in trouble and need help. Great you are at Starbucks, there is one around the corner, one in the grocery store, and another three in the parking lot. #omgredcups

Along the same lines, Iโ€™m just not that into coffee. Iโ€™ll drink it from time to time, but my go to morning beverage is tea. #notEnglishjustliketea #antioxidants

Iโ€™ve successfully boycotted Target since September. I received horrible customer service when they shipped my online order to our old address, even though I typed in our new address. They admitted it pulled the default address and after 4 phone calls and a non-delivered refund, one phone call to our credit card company fixed it. I will spend my money elsewhere. Admittedly I miss it a tiny bit but #savingmoney #holdingagrudge

I donโ€™t wear scarves, I know it will just be something for me to fidget with. Plus Iโ€™m not a fan of having to figure out the whole styling thing. #noose

I donโ€™t really accessorize. I wear earrings, but that is it when it comes to jewelry (not counting my wedding ring). I carry the same purse, really itโ€™s one purse and one camera bag that I carry pretty much 100% of the time. ย #isanimalhairanaccessory #wasToryBurchon90210

I never keep up with the latest styles. I just like what I like and donโ€™t try to keep up with the latest trends. Many trends take me years to catch up to, for example leggings. Others I just canโ€™t pull off, like the maxi dress. At this point in life, I just want all my clothes and shoes to be comfortable. #itskindtosayclassic #unfashionable #allmyshoesareflats

I don’t watch many of the popular competition shows like The Bachelor, Dancing With The Stars, The Voice, etc. I do however watch Bravo shows though ๐Ÿ™‚ #bravoforever #trainwreckcan’tlookaway #tvrotsyourbrain

That’s probably enough of pointing out how uncool I am for a day ๐Ÿ˜‰ What makes you not like the cool kids?

I just can’t rock red lipstick, maxi dresses, “arm parties,” seventeen layers all on top of each other, or pretty much anything else Pinterest says I MUST wear. My fashion, if you can call it that, is really utilitarian. Basic uniform: Columbia all weather slacks, button down with sleeves I can roll, tank or cami, ponytail, watch, rings. Occasionally earrings. Anything else is dressing up.

Yes, no arm parties for me either ๐Ÿ™‚ Bracelets in general bother me, I find them distracting. I think I talk with my hands too much to wear them. I like utilitarian, it makes dressing and packing easier! I’m trying to get to a place where I’m more simplified.

I never really wore scarves till I moved to Sweden and then it was more of necessity than a choice but now I feel weird when I do not need to wear one, like in when we went to California for Christmas everyone kept commenting on them and I was like this is what you do to leave the house people!

I’m sure if I lived somewhere cold it would quickly be adapted ๐Ÿ™‚ I see people wearing scarves all year long.

No one looks good in maxi dresses, and I’ll stand by that forever. I have never seen anyone wear a maxi dress and not look pregnant. So I vote don’t do it ๐Ÿ™‚
I would boycott target too! They haven’t wronged me, but I’ve had plenty of companies do something similar. If they don’t value my patronage, I won’t give it anymore.

Yay, Stephanie, so glad someone backs me up on the maxi dress trend ๐Ÿ™‚ I hold a grudge. It took me 5 phone calls to finally be transferred to someone not in their call center (ie India), and then they didn’t issue the refund as they said they would. I called our credit card company and they resolved it.

Haha, totally hear you on the animal hair! With two cats and a dog it is never ending! I have a lint brush in my car as a “just-in-case.”

I think it’s cool to make your own rules. I have no idea what red cups are. I always say my style is ‘classic’, I only wear my wedding ring #dontevenhaveadiamond. I’m so far from cool I’m coming at it from the other side. Or at least that’s what I choose to believe.

Oh, usually there is a bit of a IG freak out when Starbucks goes from the green to the red logo during the holidays. I only have my diamond but no band, we went through two custom bands that just did not work out. I told P I didn’t want an engagement ring even ๐Ÿ™‚ but I love mine.

OH MY GOD. The meme for this link up is brilliant. I, too, avoid Starbucks at all costs. However, Target and me go way back so I feel like it would take a lot for me to break up with it.

I love this! I was nodding along with a lot of them. Particularly how fashions/fads take so long to catch up with me. I’ll think something is hideous until it’s no longer in fashion, by which point it has grown on me and I’m wearing it.
And I’ll choose tea over coffee 9 out of 10 times.

I only started wearing maxi dresses and chambray shirts last summer. Maxi dresses are the best but I’m still trying to figure out the chambray. Sometimes I make it look really cute and sometimes it just looks weird. And I only have one purse. I can barely keep track of all my stuff as it is, I can’t imagine what would happen if I was always switching stuff back and forth.

I’m okay with Starbucks, though. I try to find local shops when I can, but sometimes convenience and the fact that I almost always have gift cards wins out.

Yes, the chambray shirt I have not adopted either ๐Ÿ™‚ I see it and I think it looks cute on others, but I know I can’t pull it off. I have a number of other purses, but only carry my camera bag and I switch that out with a small purse when I don’t need my camera. Though none of my purses are designer. I buy earrings and purses from local craft show/shops or Etsy.

I hate realty shows like the Bachelor, survivor, etc. I don’t wear scarves much for the very same reasons you listed. I just started wearing skinny jeans this year, I was hoping it was going to go away but it just wouldn’t. I don’t even think regular jeans exist? I still cant pull off a maxi dress. I dont even look at them anymore. Why is my body so awkward? I dont understand the obsession with Kendra Scott. Like sure, her stuff is pretty but $80 for a necklace that I can get at Charming Charlie’s for $10? Yeah, no thanks…

I’ve been putting off jean shopping since the Fall, I just can’t face it. The maxi dress just looks awkward on me too, they make me look short and stout ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t watch the popular shows either #boycotthebachelor #sooverated. Plus I totally agree with you that local coffee shops are best. I’m a sucker for the drive through places though, even though they are a chain too, they feel less corporate that starbucks to me and have outstanding customer service.

I will drink coffee, but not very often. I worked in a coffee shop for 4 years in college, but even then didn’t drink that much coffee. I think I was spoiled from making my own.

I’m with you when it comes to Starbucks, I go maybe once a year. A friend gave me a gift card 6 months ago that I have yet to use. But coffee is lovely! Can’t imagine starting my morning without it, I simply wouldn’t get out of bed.
The obsession with the Bachelor is beyond me! I have never watched a single episode, and it’s a point of pride now. The concept is so silly, why is this show so popular?? #uncool #proudofit

I love coffee like love love. I only go to Starbucks once in a while and when it’s convenient. I hate red cup season.

I detest heels and don’t own any. I do have a few wedges but they’re low as old ladies like them.

I own so many awesome and interesting pieces of jewelry and I wear the same things all the freaking time.

I don’t like starbucks for the coffee, but I’ve gone for the breakfast sandwiches. It’s too strong and I don’t know what is so “cool” about it that it’s so Instagrammed! I also carry the same purse. It’s too much trouble to switch stuff around. My only accessories are earrings, wedding ring and a bracelet that I haven’t taken off yet this year!!

I have a post started like this (fair warning, it starts with the fact that I don’t like hashtagged phrases but we can still be friends ;)). I agree on Starbucks. I’ll grab it occasionally if it’s convenient or if I have a gift card but I feel ZERO need to instagram it… I don’t like unnecessarily wearing heels or ridiculous white backgrounds in every photo or eating clean or most things I see as popular on the internet lately. I feel like an old woman!

Glad we can still be friends ๐Ÿ™‚ I think the hashtags are funny ๐Ÿ™‚ but yes annoying to read. I’ve full embraced the fact that I’m an old woman now, seriously I just want everything I wear to be comfortable. I’m will meet someone Starbucks if that is what they want because, well because I don’t really care about coffee. The other thing is they are actually a descent company since they promote their employees and pay them better than most chains, plus offer scholarships. Missing you on the interwebs.

I’m very much not a cool kid. No reality shows, no pop music, no scarves (anything around my neck makes me feel like I’m being strangled), no accessories except what I wear every single day (wedding rings, the same earrings since I’m 16, and a necklace, which I realize flies in the face of my comment about scarves but necklaces don’t give the same strangulation effect as scarves), no trendy clothes, etc, etc. I am who I am and I’m totally fine with it.
