Let’s Fly Away~Ghent The Booze

March 12, 2014 by Mariah 14 Comments

Ghent~The Booze via Food, Booze, & Baggage

While Ghent may seem small and a bit quaint in comparison to Brussels or Antwerp, it makes up for its lack of size in character. There is a bar on almost every corner, with none coming across as touristy. I think the mix of locals and tourists at most establishments is one of the reasons I was so taken with Ghent. While there were certainly plenty of tourists in the town, you always could spot locals at the bars and the staff never treated you like a tourist. As you will see in some of the pictures below, most of the establishments had certain quirky elements that added a to their authentic feel. They didn’t feel white washed or changed to attract visitors.

Gruut Brewery
Let’s start with Grutt brewery, which sits right on one of the canals in Ghent…talk about a beautiful spot. The space was huge and quirky. It had a very mismatched collection of furniture almost like someone raided their parents basements to collect tables, chairs and couches. As you will see in the picture below, there is a stream running through the middle of the space. And, yes that is a urinals and yes I insisted on a photo. How did I know about these? Well, when you walk to the ladies room you pass right by these for the world to see (no door). And no, I did not loiter in the men’s door and snap photos, I had P do it (that seemed more appropriate).

The beer was good, but not that notable. I could tell they rely on the same or a very similar strain of yeast for all of their beers. They did have a nice variety of styles to choose from and offered tasting flights, which I love. Here is us enjoying a flight, and while P looks like he might have had a few already, this was actually our first drinking stop of the day 🙂

t’dreupelkot
Belgium is known for their genever or jenever, which is a liquor from juniper berries (similar to gin but not in taste). We had read about this place prior to our visit and the owner brews his own genever, so we knew this was the place to try it. It is a very small, very funky little bar. We tried both the old genever and the new genever. I liked the old much better, it was much smoother, whereas the young was rougher and strong tasting…the kind of liquor you feel you could use to breathe fire. The owner had a huge variety of flavors but we stuck with just the two, as we had other drinking and eating to do that evening 🙂 And, why yes that is a very ratty looking lounge chair right there in the bar…it actual has plywood under the cushion.

Cafe ‘t Galgenhuisje
This bar was charming…just look at it. Very cozy with a great outdoor space, in a building built in 1776. It is the oldest “continuing run bar” in Ghent. The bartender was funny and the other patrons friendly. It was a mix crowd of regulars and tourists, with 80’s rock playing in the background. Stop in for a beer just for the experience and to get a peek at the interior.

De dulle griet
This was the first bar we visited in Belgium, and I was impressed. The beer menu was overwhelming (in a good way) and I got a free beer…which was a great start to our Belgium adventure. While the plate of salami and cheese looks very standard and not very exciting, it was SO good. Maybe it was the atmosphere, maybe it was because I was on the verge of breakdown hungry, or maybe it was just really, really good. It came with celery salt, and I loved it.  Just typing this makes me want salami and cheese (as a note the salami was more like summer sausage).

Visited but Not Pictured:

Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant: Great bar right on the canal, with a huge selection of bottle and draft beer (think book not menu), and very friendly service.

Trappistenhuis: Again book not menu selection of beers and awesome service. The patrons were also very friendly and very local. We went for a pre-dinner drink before our dinner at De Vitrine, which I will share next week.

Visit my first post on Ghent to see some of the views…we didn’t spend the whole time in bars 🙂

Let’s Fly Away~Ghent The Views

Ghent, Belgium~The Views via Food, Booze, & Baggage

Much like you might save the best bite of food for last, I saved my favorite Belgian city for last, Ghent. I’m dividing Ghent into three parts, following this one will be “The Booze” and finally “The Food”.  Ghent was such a charming, friendly city…just amazing. We had a great time there, and I highly recommend you adding it to your Belgium tour. It is quite compact which makes it so easy to navigate, but there is still plenty to do and see. Taking a look below to see why it was pretty much love at first sight:

One of the things that struck me was how old the buildings were; it is like stepping back in time but with all the modern conveniences. We learned that many of the fronts are from the 1800 or earlier but most are only the facades and the remaining of the building is new. We took a boat tour that was quite informative. Our tour-guide did the guide in three different languages (he could have facilitated it in even more if needed).

Let’s Fly Away~Antwerp

February 26, 2014 by Mariah 13 Comments

Antwerp via Food, Booze, & Baggage

We only spent one night in Antwerp and our whole motivation for going was one bar. Antwerp is a beautiful city, that had some very unique shopping. P was such a sport and we actually waited a few hours just for a shop to open so I could buy a green leather purse I had eyed the night before. I wish we had more time there to explore…I always want more time. I would choose Antwerp over Brussels for a return trip.

Kulminator

Kulminator was our sole reason for making Antwerp a destination, and it was well worth it. This bar is pretty much legendary in the beer world and it lived up to expectations. I like to say we conquered “beer” with this trip, because we got to try all three Westvleteren brews. You can click on the link to learn more but basically it’s very rare, it’s technically not sold in bars at all and is not on the menu. To be able to try all three together is a unique experience; that within itself made the visit worth it. The Westvleteren Blonde was hands down was my favorite beer of the whole trip. P tried a vertical tasting of Chimay Blue, which is a bottle from 1993, 2004, and 2013. I of course tried all of these, but was not impressed. The 1993 one was musky tasting, the 2004 better but not good, and the 2013 the best…it is cool to say you got to experience it and the bottles were neat but otherwise, not my thing.  I was much more happy enjoying my bootlegged beers.

There is a lot of different opinions on this bar around the internet in reference to the owner. We had no problem but we also did not engage with him at all, the wife was very nice and we got great service. The other patrons were friendly as well. We were even warned while in Ghent of the owner so I was a little worried but again we had no problems and I did not feel uncomfortable. Maybe don’t sit at the table inside covered with all the random crap and you will be ok.

Kartini

Kartini via Food, Booze, & Baggage

Kartini was great..and way too much food. This was a stumbled upon place that turned out to be a wonderful find. Very reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. It was a nice change up from the primarily french influenced dishes we had been enjoying for the past two weeks. It was the perfect way to close out our very beer filled day.

Den Boterham

This little cafe was a recommendation from the concierge at our hotel and it was the cutest. I was in love as soon as we walked in. Great brunch but I do recommend reservations.

Frituur No. 1

I got to experience the famous Belgian fries in Antwerp and fell in love with the curry ketchup…I’m still on the lookout for that stateside. It’s amazing the number of sauces there were to choose from.

t’Parlement

Offered a nice lunch outside and great people watching. Primarily pub food; we tried a traditional Belgium dish-cheese croquettes and shrimp croquettes.

Recommended but not tested:  t’Hofke  was recommended by the concierge of our hotel for traditional Belgium cuisine.

Let’s Fly Away~Brussels Part I

February 12, 2014 by Mariah 16 Comments

Brussels~Part I via Food, Booze, & Baggage

Today “Let’s Fly Away” departs France and moves over to Belgium. I’m starting with Brussels, though this was the last destination of our trip. Honestly, Brussels was my least favorite of all the places we visited. Don’t get me wrong, it was a lot of fun, but it just did not live up to the other cities. To start with it was extremely touristy, crowded, and a bit dirty. The city itself was beautiful but when you walked around in the morning, there was trash thrown everywhere in the streets and even in the beautiful gardens. The touristy factor really turned me off the city. Despite this a good time was still had and I’m going to share it!

Manneken Pis

Manneken Pis via Food, Booze, & BaggageWe were not exactly seeking out the Manneken Pis when we ventured over to this part of Brussels. Frankly, the commotion caused by the Duval advertisement depicting the Manneken Pis off a street near our hotel was enough for me…tourists were literally blocking the whole street trying to get pictures…hello it’s an ad, not even the real thing. Well, Poechenellekelder was a great destination because it was right near the square but we were out of the commotion. There was also some parade going on and the statue was dressed in a suit that day.

Poechenellekelder

These were some of the entertainers from the parade. A few of the stilt walkers came in through our table window which was fun. I regret a bit for not trying out a walk on the stilt myself. They were trying to get me to climb out the window to try the stilts but I was a bit worried about smashing my head on the cobblestones, so I declined. This made for a very enjoyable/entertaining afternoon.

Bier Circus

This was both a beer destination and a dinner spot. The food was a real surprise as I was not sure what to expect, but it was excellent. All of the dishes incorporated beer and it hit the spot. Great, unique selection of beer and a high level of attention to detail and care for the beer.
