Discovering San Diego: October 2015

November 12, 2015 by Mariah 14 Comments

Discovering-San-Diego-October

September officially marked a year in San Diego for us, and this past month I tried to make an effort to renew our quest to try new spots. It’s so easy to stay in our hood and go to some of our regular spots for a relaxing night out. Speaking of places I don’t mind going to over and over, I shared some of my favorite San Diego spots for a travel guide on Feast + West. Go check out what made my list for Hidden Gems: San Diego.

We did manage to try these new spots in October:

Food

Water Grill

Water Grill San Diego

Their space is beautiful, I loved it as soon as I walked in. Very open and airy. The oysters were very yummy and I enjoyed the wedge salad I ordered. The wedge salad was HUGE. I’ve had better, but this one was solidly good. Shannon’s shrimp and grits were excellent, though I wish they had a touch more spice. I will certainly go back to try out dinner and maybe a cocktail 🙂

Brother’s Provisions

Brothers Provisions

Oh my this was quite the find! It was SO SO good, and I want to go back 🙂 Both our sandwiches were amazing. I want to try all their sandwich options. They have an interesting menu and quality ingredients. Also while an order at the counter place, the inside was nicely appointed and lots of seating.

CounterPoint

Counterpoint San Diego

We tried it out for brunch and were impressed. The bologna sandwich was a nice surprise too, don’t see very many of those in San Diego, and it was good. I really enjoyed my Chicken & Waffles Benedict, best seasoned fried chicken I’ve had! Even if the hollandaise looks a bit wonky, it still tasted good.

Bracero

Bracero Little Italy San Diego

This is a fairly new addition to the Little Italy food scene, that has gotten a ton of buzz from articles and foodie groups.

We tried:

  • Surf and Turf Oysters: beef tartare over an oyster, and it was amazing! The oysters were so good!
  • Beef Tongue Confit taco: meh, I wasn’t overly impressed, it wasn’t hot enough, lukewarm, and the corn tortilla was a bit damp. P though said he really liked it. I didn’t find it had a whole lot of flavor.
  • Shrimp and Bone Marrow Sopa: OMG this was the BEST dish. I’ve never had anything like this before and it’s hard to describe. It was basically shrimp in a bone marrow (sauce) over a very yummy cake (maybe corn not sure what it was made up of).
  • Crispy Corn Masa Egg: This dish was excellent too, very flavorful. I wasn’t sure about potato foam, but it was salty and yummy, not overly earthy. All the components of the dish worked beautifully.
  • Grilled Octopus: cooked perfectly, it was tender. Though I feel like the smoke overwhelmed the whole dish and the components did not really come together like the shrimp and masa egg dishes, but it was still good.

We also ordered a few cocktails, which were both great, well balanced. They offer quite a few craft Mexican beers, and wines from Baja, it’s nice they have wine and beer that reflect the menu. If you are smoke sensitive at all, request with your reservation to not be seated near the upstairs kitchen. The smoke from the kitchen was overwhelming upstairs, we came home and my hair smelled. That was really a turn-off for me. I enjoyed our waiter, and he was very personable. However, I did not feel like the service was that smooth, we waited quite a while between finishing and ordering our next dishes, water service was ok but not great, and I felt like there were lots of staff standing around. Dishes came out basically all together, which was fine for us, but if you were at a table with ordering lots of dishes this may be an issue. I feel like their service could be refined to be a really great dining experience, but we will certainly be back for the food.

Smoking Goat

Smoking Goat San Diego

I had high hopes for this place. So many people recommended it, but I was not impressed. This was one of the worst prepared ducks I’ve had, so disappointed. The other food was ok, but nothing special. We may try it again for their happy hour and get just appetizers, but I would not go back for entrees. They just are not worth the price. The escargot and soup were the best part of the meal.

Booze

The Homebrewer

The Homebrewer San Diego

This is where P buys his home brew supplies, but we had yet to try their beer so we finally corrected that. I really liked that they offered a few single malt, single hop beers, because it is neat to see what those single ingredients produce. The seating is very limited, it’s more pop in for a sample and pop out. Not really a hang out kind of set-up.

O’Sullivan Brothers Brewing

O'Sullivan Brothers Brewing

Very standard American style beers, that are well done. I prefer just a bit more innovative offerings, but their beers were well made. Tight space, but they were friendly and had a fair amount of seating available, and it was kind of neat to seat so close to the “action”.

Division 23 Brewing

Division 23 Brewing San Diego

Overall ok beer, but could use some refining.  The IPA we tried was really off, but the brown and porter were good. The space is a bit dark, but fairly large with friendly bar staff and plenty of seating.

Other

Kayaking with P. I went prior with Shannon, and P wanted to try it out. We did the same provider as the one I did before, using Everyday California. It was good, though a bit boring as it was the same information/show as the first time around. They are really big on group participation and it was a little hard to pay attention when they ask the group the same questions that I already know. It was a nice day, and I did get in the water this time. We actually got rained out of our first scheduled tour and went back the next weekend.

We dressed up for the first time as a couple for a Halloween party! I forgot to take pictures before we left for the party, so this is the only one I have. We had a fun night out!

M + P Halloween 2015

I made this little beauty at Pigment with Esther. It was a fun little afternoon activity, though I feel like the customer service could have been vastly approved upon.

Discovering San Diego August/September

October 6, 2015 by Mariah 16 Comments

Discovering-San-Diego-August-&-September-2015
September marked one year since we have moved to San Diego! The time has flown by and we have barely scratched the surface of what San Diego (and surrounding area) has to offer. August and September were by far the slowest months we have had to-date in terms of seeking out new adventures around town. August I wasn’t surprised about since we had two weekends were were out of town, but September was a bit unexpected. With the move and then me being sick, we basically only had one weekend where I felt like getting out and then I was pushing to make sure 100% of the house things have been taken care of. So, this Discovering San Diego post will be the shortest one I’ve had. We plan on getting back to it in October, we have to make up for lost time 🙂 I debated whether or not I’m going to keep up with the series, I decided I do want to. I like being able to look back and see all we have done, plus it keeps us trying new places 🙂

Food

Krakatoa
Krakatoa San Diego
A hidden gem, tucked away in Golden Hill, a sandwich shop/coffee shop. They have a great outdoor area, and their sandwiches are tasty. This is a place we will definitely go back to, and I have (as I took Shannon one day). Just very casual spot to drop in and grab a sandwich. I want to go back and try a coffee drink one of these days too.

Big Kitchen Cafe
Big Kitchen Cafe San Diego
The Big Kitchen Cafe shows up on a ton of lists for best breakfast, and usually seems quite busy all the times we have driven by. We finally decided to give it a go one morning before heading off on a hike. It’s very diner in feel. I wasn’t blown away by our dishes. I liked our breakfast at Antique Row Cafe better, for a diner type breakfast. I had sausage and gravy and wasn’t impressed with the biscuit or the gravy. P’s omelet was not well balanced with stuffing, and had WAY too much spinach. That was all I could taste. With that said, I still want to return and try their pancakes, which I was lusting over from afar. I have a feeling those might the item to order. Also, the waitstaff was nice and the owner was there, making sure everyone felt welcomed.

Rustic Root
Rustic Root San Diego
Newish spot in the Gaslamp District. Good, but not blown away. The egg was overcooked on my biscuit and I just wasn’t wowed overall. We still want to try it for dinner though and their cocktails look really good.

Shorehouse Kitchen (Brunch)
Shorehouse Kitchen La Jolla
So good!! This is one of the better brunches we have had in town. Spot on flavors and interesting menu. I highly recommend the Crispy Parmesan Risotto & Honey Cured Bacon Benedict (we have had it on two visits). This place gets busy fast, no reservations, so I suggest you aim for earlier morning. Despite them being busy, we have found the hostess and servers extremely friendly.

Kiko’s Place Food Truck

All this for under $5! They never disappoint. #discoveringsandiego #foodtruck #sandiego #lunch #fishtacos #ceviche

Not a restaurant, but our neighborhood fish taco truck. I’m mentioning this here, because they fed us probably for half the month. Seriously good fish tacos, and for $1.75. How crazy is that?! I’m sure you are thinking it can’t be that good, but it is. Always fresh and hot, also they almost always have a line going, so it’s popular. I get the fish taco and shrimp ceviche ($3.00), sometimes the ceviche is better than others, but you can’t get better “fast food”. They park at the convenience store on Texas and Meade.

Booze

Ballast Point Tasting Room (Little Italy)
Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen Little Italy
Ok I’ve been here a number of times, we even went on our househunting trip, however I have never mentioned it in a Discovering San Diego post! So, I am righting that wrong and we even ordered lunch so I had the food+beer to talk about. I really like the Little Italy tasting room, I love that they almost always have a good selection of R&D beers available, beers I can’t find at the store or our local bars. Service is always friendly and it’s a great spot to grab a beer. Their food has been good too, this is the first time we got sandwiches, and I was not disappointed.

Bay City Brewing
Bay City Brewing Co
Oh my, hardest to find brewery in San Diego 🙂 This is tucked away on a one way street, we ended up cutting through the casino parking lot. I would recommend looking this up and look at the map before heading over. Even though I wasn’t really feeling drinking when we went, I still thought all their beers were good. Which is saying something. It was so hot and I just was not 100%.

Border X Tasting Room
Border X Brewing San Diego
This is the transitional neighborhood of Barrio Logan. Really friendly service and patrons, the beer was good. Some were better than others, but overall a good offering.

Cellar 3
Cellar 3 San Diego
This is Green Flash’s dedicated sour and barrel-aged production tasting room/brewery. It was very cool, in addition to a great list of rare sour/barrel-aged offerings, they also offer some Alpine and Green Flash brews. And they have their own food truck (what?!). Super impressed with the cheese and meat board and the deviled eggs. Really great quality of products and I’m sure their sandwiches would be tasty too. This is one I know we will seek out again. Nice outdoor space, but not a huge about of seating.

Other

Baseball Game

Baseball Game San Diego
Thanks to Shannon’s invite, we finally made it to a Padres game! We had a great time. The ballpark has a great beer selection, and I really enjoyed my hotdog and nachos. I’m so glad we got the opportunity to go, and such good seats!! It’s a nice ballpark, and it did feel overly crowded.

Hiking

We made it to the other trail in Torrey Pines, which I will do a separate post on. I enjoyed the first trails we did on our first trip to Torrey Pines more though.

San Diego has treated us well this year! When are you coming to visit? 🙂

It’s easy to go back to the places we know and get a little lazy in our adventure seeking. This is a way to keep P and I seeking out at least one new adventure every weekend! Discovering San Diego: March 2015

April 9, 2015 by Mariah 26 Comments

Discovering San Diego March 2015
March was good to us here in San Diego. We got a few beach days in, got back to exploring, and just enjoyed being home. I’ve said it many times, in many posts, but I cannot get over the weather here. It’s warm and SO MUCH sunshine. I’m still wowed that we can go to the beach in March (and February)! We just keep adding to our list of things to see, eat, and do!

FOOD

Tajima (Hillcrest)
Tajima Hillcrest
P & I are obsessed. We went two-weeks in a row! It is very tasty ramen. I like this ramen over Underbelly’s ramen. Both times I got the curry ramen, it was so good I couldn’t resist. P got the spicy sesame ramen the first time, but switched to the curry on our second visit. So, I guess what I’m saying is get the curry ramen 🙂 They have an interesting selection of Japanese beers too.

Stone Brewing Bistro & Beer Garden, Escondido
Stone Brewing The Food
It’s an amazing space, very indoor/outdoor. The food was excellent, but I was pretty disappointed with the beer selection. There were not very many unique beers offered. I love that you can make reservations. However, it was overrun by children. I am not exaggerating when I say that every other table had one or more child at it. They were climbing all over the stone pond area in the middle, we saw three trip and start screaming while playing around said pond, all right in the middle of the outdoor patio…it was far from relaxing. They had further outdoor space that you could walk around with your beer and sit an enjoy, that was very cool. It was a nice trip, but not something I would say is really worth your time if you are just visiting San Diego.
Stone Brewing Outdoor Space

Indigo Grill
Indigo Grill
This is a upscale Mexican inspired restaurant in Little Italy. They have a nice space, with a lovely glassed in patio. I was pleasantly surprised by how good our food turned out to be. The cocktail was not very good, not well balanced. I would order beer or wine if we went again. We ordered the shrimp and scallop ceviche, it lacked flavor overall and was short on seafood. I would skip the ceviche here. However, the meal was redeemed with our other two dishes. The clam and mussel dish had the best broth so far of all the mussel dishes we have had in San Diego, I liked the clams better than the mussels, but all had great flavor and were cooked perfectly. The second dish was the Anticucho Board, my favorite part was the hummus, it all went together really well. Again, impressed with the variety and depth of flavor.

Table 10
Table Ten San Diego
We tried this for brunch, and it was good, but I wasn’t wowed. I love their space, very clean and open, and the service was great too. The french toast deviled eggs were the highlight of brunch; very interesting idea, sweet and savory. Both of our other dishes were good, but I’ve had much better versions of chilaquiles and shrimp and grits elsewhere. The grits were too watery and the dish overall lacked that flavor punch. P’s chilaquiles was good but the garlic in the verda overwhelmed the dish a bit. We will still try it for dinner, but it is not a top pick for brunch.

Cantina Mayahuel
Cantina Mayahuel
You have to get the pinto beans!! I’m totally addicted, we went two-weeks in a row. Oh, their tacos aren’t too bad either. 😉 This place is so good, definitely a hidden gem. Huge selection of tequila and good margaritas. This is our new go-to Mexican place! I want to make it back soon on a Friday to try their mole, which they prepare 3 different ways!

Subterranean Coffee Bar
Subterranean Coffee
P and I have walked by this place on several occasions and decided to pop in for a light breakfast one morning before heading to the beach. They caught my eye with a green tea and strawberry smoothie which was pretty tasty…almost like a strawberry milkshake. Their breakfast bagels were very good; it hit the spot for a filling, but not too heavy breakfast. They serve Bird Rock coffee, which is cool. Bird Rock is an award winning roaster in La Jolla, so it is nice to be able to get their coffee in the North Park area. Very friendly staff and a wide selection of creative beverages, we will certainly make our way over here again.

Half Door Brewing
Half Door Brewing
It’s right near Petco Park, in an old restored house. Such a cool space, but more restaurant than brewery feel. I went here first with Shannon for lunch and then had to go back immediately with P as he could not stop talking about not getting to go 🙂 Their beers are spot on, really good beers. Now the food…so the first two times I went the food was wonderful, I was so impressed. P and I went a third time and well I was not impressed with the changes they made to the chicken sandwich. It was like they stepped the quality down by half on the meat, the cheese, and the bread used. So disappointing. P’s flatbread was good that trip, but I’m worried that this might be a trend of lowering quality after their initial open. Hopefully it is was a one-off experience. If you are looking for a great beer in a great space, this is your stop. I love their upstairs balcony, you get lots of sun, which can be hard to find downtown.

Jaynes Gastropub
Jaynes Gastropub
Oh man, we had heard great things about this place from many different people, and they were not lying. The description as a gastropub is a bit misleading. It’s much nicer than what I think of as an American gastropubs and it has a better feel. What gastropub have you been to that has fresh flowers? I totally was in love with the place and the food was so good. They have more than just sandwiches (my second choice was the duck) but for some reason the pastrami special was calling my name that night. I’m glad I listened because it hit the spot, it wasn’t greasy and had great flavor overall. P’s fish was SO good too, the breading was very light and it wasn’t greasy at all. The fish was well seasoned, even without the breading. We will definitely be back for another visit. The service was also very friendly and we just instantly felt relaxed here.

Supannee House of Thai
House of Thai
I’ve finally found a Thai place with good Tom Yum!! Of course it’s not in near our neighborhood, but still the food was spot on! Lots of flavor and spice. I got most of mine a medium and it was spicy! The green papaya salad was quite spicy and had good flavor though the shrimp were a bit overcooked. Very nice space, lots of light. I’m sure we will making a trip back here at some point.

West Coast Tavern
West Coast Tavern
Great service, interesting menu, but nothing to really write home about. 🙂 The atmosphere is just not our scene and the music (even outside) was too loud. Our food was fine, nothing wrong, but both P and I agreed it was only ok. I think there are so just so many REALLY good brunch spots in San Diego that you have to be sourcing great ingredients and have solid cooks to make an impression. I wouldn’t say avoid West Coast by any means, but it’s unlikely a repeat for us.

The Not So Good
Alexander’s
This place is so cute, I want to like it, but I just can’t. This will not be getting a second chance from us. The risotto was not risotto, not even close, it was closer to paella than risotto. P’s alfredo was good, but given how bad my dish was, and how many other Italian places there are to choose from, I can’t justify going back.

BOOZE

Sycamore Den
Sycamore Den
Very retro! They really stick to their theme (70’s-80’s) too, they play 70’s music and had Footloose and Dirty Dancing on the tv. The drinks were made well, though I wish they had a wider cocktail menu. Overall, a neat little place.

Mother Earth, Vista, CA
Mother Earth Brewing
We went to not one, but both their tasting rooms in Vista. The one on Main Street is definitely the one to go to, much nicer atmosphere with basically the same beer list available. Nice selection of beers, and good space. Very dog friendly.

Lost Abbey-Port Brewing, Escondido
Lost Abbey Port Brewing
This place was PACKED. Nice selection of beers from Lost Abbey and Port Brewing. We only sampled a few Lost Abbey ales, all quite good. We didn’t hang out for too long since it was so busy.

That’s it for March. We also went to Old Town, but I wasn’t inspired to get pictures…too touristy for my taste.
