DIY Face Oil

April 23, 2015 by Mariah 8 Comments

 DIY Facial Oil

Months ago I shared my recipe for beard oil, but I never did get around to share my super secret DIY face oil!! I love making my own products, and experimenting with how different oils feel and work. This version has a TON of ingredients, but I love it. My skin seems firmer from using it and it hydrates nicely. If I need to, I will mix a little body butter + the oil in the palm of my hand to provide a bit more protection and hydration. I loosely based my version on the Marie Veronique face oil. When I started down the more natural route, I received a sample of the Marie Veronique Organics face oil, and loved it. I bought a bottle, but once I ventured into making my own products, I thought I can make something like this for a fraction of the cost. So, I did!! Of course, it’s not exactly the same product, but I’m happy with how it makes my skin feel and I don’t have to shell out $75 a bottle.

The beauty of face oil is that is so customizable & EASY!! You can add more or less of any of the oils to get it just to your liking…well, expect for a few you SHOULD NOT add too much of as I note below. If you are new to working with some of these oils, I highly recommend you rub a little between your fingers and/or on the back of your hand to get an idea of the consistency, heaviness, and the way it absorbs. DON’T touch the essential oils in raw form, only the carrier oils!! The other great advantage of making your own is you can buy all organic oils, so you know exactly what you are putting on your face.

This is for a 1 oz bottle (30 ml). The bottle plus all the ingredients can be purchased from Mountain Rose.  I use the 1 oz blue dropper bottle.

Carrier oils

  • 10 ml joboba oil + 5 ml (15 total)
  • 5 ml rosehip oil (no more than this amount)**
  • 5 ml sunflower oil
  • 5 ml apricot kernel oil
  • ½  teaspoon argan oil
  • ¼ teaspoon pomegranate seed oil
  • ⅛ teaspoon tamanu (no more than ¼ teaspoon)**
  • ⅛ teaspoon sea buckthorn oil (no more than this amount)**

Essential oils

  • 4 drops carrot seed oil
  • 5-8 drops rose essential oil

Measure out the above EXCEPT for the essential oils & 5 ml joboba into a pourable container. I use this handy-dandy measuring cup, it works perfectly. Once all the oils are measured, pour into a clean glass bottle. I just pour it straight in but you could also use a small funnel if you are not steady handed. Next pour 5 ml joboba into your measuring container and swirl to pick up some of the heavier oils left-over, add to dropper bottle. Next drop essential oils (carrot & rose) straight into the bottle, screw on top, shake, smell and a few more drops of rose if you want. I don’t like my facial oil to be very smelly.

Shake before each use. Best applied right after washing face, to slightly damp skin. I like to use the Rose Hydrosol from Mountain Rose before application. This oil should only be applied to cleaned skin.

**Rosehip oil is great but too much of it will turn your skin orange, so make sure it is diluted.

**Sea Buckthorn oil is staining, it will also dye your skin orange,  more so than rosehip oil. Very small dosages of this, it’s a very heavy and rich oil.

**Tamanu while this is green/brown in color, I don’t think it will dye your skin, but it’s another heavy/rich oil, with a distinctive smell. Too much will overwhelm the rose scent, and other oils.

I realize my version is a lot of oils to buy. I don’t want you to be completely put off trying your own, because you don’t want to make the investment, or it seems too complicated. Start with just a few oils and move on from there. Try Crunchy Betty’s 3 ingredient recipe if my version is too much, I used her recipe my first time making facial oil. Also, be warned once you start in on DIY beauty products you may get addicted 🙂 This is my ingredients cart

DIY Beard Oil

DIY Beard Oil

With Valentine’s Day coming up and the stresses of winter, now is a great time to DIY your bearded guy a gift of some beard oil. Or if you’re a bearded guy, you can treat yourself to a DIY bottle 🙂  It’s super, super, easy to make!! Like seriously, just pouring some oil into a bottle. You can do that! The oils can be used for other DIY beauty projects (like Face Oil). This oil smells good, soothes skin, and softens beards. It’s been P approved. This oil works well for the non-bearded guy too (or on non-bearded parts, like your forehead), just a drop or two will do to sooth and moisturize.

The below recipe is very flexible, and you can substitute out many of the oils for ones you have on hand or want to try. I’ll give you some alternatives after the recipe. The fun part of making your own products is that you can experiment and find what works best for you. This beard oil is very light, P wanted a beard oil that was not too “oily” or “rich” feeling. This absorbs quickly and is light feeling. This recipe is for 30 ml of beard oil (⅛ cup or 2 tablespoons worth), for storage in an 1 oz sized bottle. A glass colored bottle with a dropper is ideal. It’s best if used right after the shower or washing the face, while the beard is still damp.

Sandalwood DIY Beard Oil

  • 15 ml jojoba oil
  • 5 ml argan oil
  • 5 ml apricot kernel oil
  • 5 ml sunflower seed oil
  • 5-10 drops sandalwood essential oil

Measure out the above EXCEPT for the essential oil into a pourable container. I use this handy-dandy measuring cup, it works perfectly. Once all the oils are measured, pour into a clean glass bottle. I just pour it straight in but you could also use a small funnel if you are not steady handed. Next drop about 5 drops of essential oil straight into the bottle, shake, smell and add more as wanted (don’t go over 15 as a general rule).

Simpler (less expensive) Version
Most of the above can be found in the drugstore or Whole Foods, but below is an even simpler version:

  • 15 ml jojoba oil
  • 5 ml olive oil (argan is easy to find and better than olive but the olive oil is less expensive and most likely to be on hand)
  • 10 ml sunflower seed oil
  • 3-5 drops rosemary essential oil (or omit altogether)

Other Notes on Substitutions:
The jojoba oil in the recipe helps to keep it very light feeling and absorbs quickly. I would recommend keeping jojoba for the base of your beard oil because of it’s unique properties. It’s actually not an oil but a waxy ester, which allows it to absorb faster and is very close to the natural oils found on skin.

The argan oil is known for it soothing and smoothing benefits. It’s also helps to hydrate skin and hair, and has anti-aging properties.

Sunflower seed oil is considered a light oil, and is quite beneficial. Grape oil could be substituted for the sunflower oil as a comparable replacement. For a richer finished product a heavier oil like olive or avocado could be used. You could also just replace it completely with more argan or apricot kernel oil.

Apricot kernel oil could also be replaced with the sunflower seed oil or argan. If you replace both the sunflower and apricot with the argan, your oil will be much heavier and richer than the original recipe. Other oils to use are: rosehip oil (this will give the end product a pinkish/orange hue) or meadowfoam (a bit richer than apricot).

The sandalwood can be omitted completely or be subbed for another scent. Sandalwood can be pricey, other substitutions to consider are: rosemary, cedarwood, or spruce. You can blend scents and use other scents that you like, just make sure to start out with just a few drops at a time, some essential oils are stronger than others.

While making this, rub a bit of each oil (not the essential oil) between your fingers or on the back on your hand. This will give you an idea of what I mean by heavier and lighter.

I buy most of my oils and essentials oils from Mountain Rose Herbs, you can also get the dropper bottles from them. Again, most of the ingredients can be found at Whole Foods or the drugstore. Other sources include Vitacost or Amazon.

Coconut Oil Shaving Cream~Easy, Easier, & Easiest

January 8, 2015 by Mariah 12 Comments

DIY Coconut-Oil-Shaving-Cream

I love to use coconut oil as a shaving cream. Before I started using more natural products, my legs use to burn after shaving…especially in the winter, now I have no problems. It’s inexpensive compared to buying commercial shaving cream, and coconut oil is very easy to find.  Be careful with dropping extra in your shower, as it can be slippery and this is not travel friendly. It will melt at around 76 degrees, I don’t recommend traveling with it. I’m giving you guys plenty of options to try coconut oil in your routine with these three versions 🙂 However, the whipped version is much nicer and easier to use…I highly recommend you take the extra step.

Easiest

Shaving with Coconut Oil

The easiest way to use coconut oil for shaving cream is just straight-up coconut oil. That’s right…just dig some out of the jar, put it in a container you want to go in the shower and smooth on. This version may be hard to smooth over your legs, and will be more crumbly unless it is warm. Still works but you could do better.

Easier

Coconut-Oil-Shavign-Cream Stir Only

Put coconut oil in container you are going to store it in, and stir in a bit of essential oil or other oil using a spoon. This will provide a smoother texture to the oil and give it a nice light scent. Still there will be some hard pieces, making it less easy to smooth on. This is a step above the oil straight from the jar, but it’s not as easy to use as the next version…which requires you to get out a mixing bowl and mixers.

Easy

Easy-Coconut-Oil-Shaving-Cream

Whip 1 cup coconut oil with 10-15 drops of essential oil and 2 tablespoons carrier oil of your choice. I used rosehip oil, but any oil would work, like olive oil or sunflower seed oil. The essential oil is used for smell only and is optional. I used lavender essential oil, but you could use any one you prefer. Use caution if using citrus based essential oils, because of phototoxicity. By whipping the coconut oil with another oil it provides a much lighter and more stable finished product. This version will be much easier to smooth on. To get a 100% smooth product you can melt the coconut oil, mix in oil and essential oil, put in the refrigerator to re-solidify and then whip (I don’t bother with this but you could). Either way, once whipped put it in your container and you are on your way to smooth and moisturized skin. Follow your shower with this Skin Saving Body Butter and your skin won’t even remember it’s winter.

Lips

True story, after switching to natural lip products, I’m not nearly as addicted to them. Before switching my lips would sometimes feel dry and a little like they burned if I was not applying Chapstick every hour. After switching I don’t feel the need to apply balm so often. My lips still get dry in the winter and I like to apply balm in the morning, maybe after lunch, and before bed, but not throughout the day like before. I really urge you to look for a product that is petroleum free, because that is apparently what causes your lips to feel the need for more product.

Nails

Nail polish is listed as one of the worst beauty products for toxins. The ones listed below are supposed to be less toxic, and better for the environment than the traditional brands. I have worn polish on my toenails nonstop since I was in Middle School. Within that time period I have went a day or two without painting my nails but that time would not even add up to a month. I like my toes painted, end of story. While I have switched brands, I have not done a ton of research into this area, because I’m not giving up polish and I don’t want to think about it. If I get a pedicure, I cheat and use whatever the salon carries; there are few salons in our area that carry cleaner products. I just read an interesting blog post on Pemberley Jones about how she brings her own supplies to the salon. I’m not sure I’m quite that brave, but it is a damn good idea 🙂

PRITI NYC: this is the brand I have gone with, mainly because it was one of the first ones I discovered. Their polish stays well, the remover is a bit harder to use than traditional remover, but it works. You have to let the remover sit on the nail for a little while (maybe a minute) for it to work best. Side Note~I love their crystal glass nail file-LOVE!
