Not Like The Cool Kids

June 3, 2015 by Mariah 35 Comments

Not Like The Cool Kids

I figured I should get this post up while the song is still popular. The fact that I’m using for a blog post probably means it’s already not popular. I do love this song (popular or not), it’s so catchy.

Enough about my choice in music 🙂 Let’s move onto the other things that make me not like the cool kids.

I do not like Starbucks. If I’m on vacation or home I want an independent coffee shop. If you ever see me post a Starbucks picture, it’s a signal I’m in trouble and need help. Great you are at Starbucks, there is one around the corner, one in the grocery store, and another three in the parking lot. #omgredcups

Along the same lines, I’m just not that into coffee. I’ll drink it from time to time, but my go to morning beverage is tea. #notEnglishjustliketea #antioxidants

I’ve successfully boycotted Target since September. I received horrible customer service when they shipped my online order to our old address, even though I typed in our new address. They admitted it pulled the default address and after 4 phone calls and a non-delivered refund, one phone call to our credit card company fixed it. I will spend my money elsewhere. Admittedly I miss it a tiny bit but #savingmoney #holdingagrudge

I don’t wear scarves, I know it will just be something for me to fidget with. Plus I’m not a fan of having to figure out the whole styling thing. #noose

I don’t really accessorize. I wear earrings, but that is it when it comes to jewelry (not counting my wedding ring). I carry the same purse, really it’s one purse and one camera bag that I carry pretty much 100% of the time.  #isanimalhairanaccessory #wasToryBurchon90210

I never keep up with the latest styles. I just like what I like and don’t try to keep up with the latest trends. Many trends take me years to catch up to, for example leggings. Others I just can’t pull off, like the maxi dress. At this point in life, I just want all my clothes and shoes to be comfortable. #itskindtosayclassic #unfashionable #allmyshoesareflats

I don’t watch many of the popular competition shows like The Bachelor, Dancing With The Stars, The Voice, etc. I do however watch Bravo shows though 🙂 #bravoforever #trainwreckcan’tlookaway #tvrotsyourbrain

That’s probably enough of pointing out how uncool I am for a day 😉 What makes you not like the cool kids?

The Airing of Grievances: Parenting Edition

April 22, 2015 by Mariah 40 Comments

Airing of Grievances Parenting Edition
I have a lot of problems with you people, and I’m looking at you parents. Alternatively this also could have been titled “How Parents are Ruining My Dining/Drinking Experience” 🙂

Just because I do not have a child does not mean I can’t or won’t judge parents. It is not necessarily due to having a child or not having child, it’s called common sense/common decency.  Sure the card of “you don’t know what you will or won’t do until you have kids of your own” is often played, but that’s an easy bow out of bad behavior. I’m sorry, but your life does not and should not continue exactly how it was prior to you having a child, those days are behind you and you need to start making adjustments. Here are a few examples of some parenting behaviors I’ve witnessed lately and said umm no….

  • Allowing my kids to run around a restaurant, any restaurant. Particularly where bodily harm is very likely while I sit barely within eyesight, enjoying my drink and conversation. It’s not Chuck E Cheese. A patio does not equal a playground. Which seems to be a confusion many parents make.
  • I would not host a table full of kids at a very crowded brewery. Second weekend this place was open, so of course it was slammed. There was a table of 3 adults and 7 kids. Yes, the place offered food, but come on. You know it is going to be busy, it’s late Saturday afternoon. Also, they were just hanging out, clearly they were finished eating by the mess on the table, but they just stayed even through a huge party of VERY drunk folks had taken over the whole area. If I had a child I would not have been comfortable in that situation.
  • Take my kid to dinner after 7:30. There is very few reason you should be dragging a child under the age of one out to dinner past 7:30. You just shouldn’t, especially at any place that has waitstaff and accepts reservations.
  • Breastfeeding at a brewery while drinking beer. This just seems wrong.
  • Allowing my kid who can barely even stand up or walk, place their own order. Sure, they have to learn to make decisions on their own, but a line out the door at a coffeeshop is not that time. Pick and choose your moments parents!
  • Exclaiming very loudly and repeatedly to my husband, how cute my child is and then looking around to see if anyone at neighboring tables will say it. I was “this” close to start repeatedly saying  to P in a loud voice, “Doesn’t my hair look great today, I mean it’s just so great!” I also would not announce to a neighboring table (of strangers) that I was going to start trying for another one in two weeks when the first one is exactly one. But hey, maybe that’s just me being a prude. It is possible this woman was this way before they had the kid, and she would be telling her husband really loudly how great her hair looked instead of how cute the kid was 🙂

Alternately you could replace kid with a really drunk friend and I would feel the same…..

  • Allowing my drunk friend to run around a restaurant.
  • Not for this one, because it’s a bar and that’s where drunks belong 🙂
  • Getting smashed and then going to a really nice fancy restaurant…and I don’t mean tipsy I mean shit-faced.
  • Allowing my drunk friend to crash a Chuck E Cheese party. (not exactly the same but a bit along the same lines, this one could also be used for the second one)
  • Allowing drunk friend who can barely stand order food.
  • Drunk person yelling during a meal about how cute anything is and/or who they may fuck later.

Well, that’s my airing of grievances for today. Anything you want to air?

Delayed Updates & Other Confessions

July 23, 2014 by Mariah 24 Comments

Reader, it’s been a few weeks since my last confession and I feel like it is time to get some things off my chest. I confess:

Vodka and Soda

  • I never did update you on what camera bag and strap I chose from my Top 5 Camera Bag and Strap Picks. So here goes:

Camera Bag and Accessory Reveal via Food, Booze, & Baggage.png

Both from Etsy

Bag~Porteengear~Leather Camera Bag with Blue Tartan
I thought this would be a bit more grey than brown but it is still nice. It’s a great size!

Strap~RSVP Handcrafted~Leather Strap
Not the most comfortable but very lovely.
Also, I’m pretty jealous of Esther’s awesome new strap.

  • I’m slowly losing little pieces of my mind but I’m hoping to find them soon.
  • I only have one more week of work!!! I’m SO excited and scared all at the same time!! What am I going to do with myself…oh yeah…pack!
  • We didn’t really watch the World Cup, but we are all over the Tour de France. We catch-up every night. Secretly (or not so secretly now) I kind of look forward to the wrecks (but not for people to get hurt)…I feel terrible for confessing this. The downhill parts make me so nervous. I yell at the stupid spectators that get in the bikers faces. Seriously, I would hit someone who got in front of me like some of those crazy spectators! And this guy did in the 2011 race.

  • I’ve already pinned over 30 restaurants to try in San Diego…P said, “I don’t imagine very many dinners at home in our future.”  Also, I can’t wait to try this place for brunch.
  • I’m kind of feeling like a bad-ass blogger this week because I started the week with three blog posts completed! Winning! 🙂
  • I hope all of you will come back tomorrow to see part two of Tara’s food journey. Oh, you didn’t catch part one…no worries, here it is. You are welcome!

I’m Going to be a Cali Girl

July 2, 2014 by Mariah 44 Comments

New Adventures via Food, Booze, & Baggage

I have some major news…P and I are moving to California, specifically to San Diego!! I’m freaked out and SO excited all at the same time!! Basically, I’m flipping my F-ing lid 🙂 We are thinking it will happen September (ish).

Ok, so this is going to be a short post, because my mind is fried and I cannot focus. Any recommendations on where to live, things to do, places to eat and places to drink? I know that San Diego has over 80 breweries….WHAT!!?!

Things I’m worried about  (there is a million things I’m worried about but here are a few):

  • How are we going to survive a cross-country road-trip in a Mini with a Lab and a kitty? Even without the animals, I’ve never driven that far before.  I’m dead set on driving, I will not fly Sam. I read this terrible post about a dog dying on a plane and just will not risk it.
  • Moving cross-country and all the logistics of that.
  • Finding a place to live (ok this is like #1), also despite San Diego being rumored a dog friendly city, it does not seem to hold true for the rental market.
  • Fitting-in, in California (actually I’m not overly worried about this, as P points out I can get along anywhere). Still.
  • Moving to a city I’ve never even visited.
  • Getting in shape, since I plan on living in a bathing suit half the year.
  • Being cold most of the year…lower 70s does not seem warm enough to me.

Worries aside, I’m over the moon excited!! I love being able to have a new adventure and I’m so grateful for the opportunity! My mind is spinning with all the new opportunities and planning to do!

Confession: I’m writing this after 3 bottles of champagne 🙂 okay two champagne and one cava. Stop grilling me 😉
