Discovering San Diego: October 2015

November 12, 2015 by Mariah 14 Comments

Discovering-San-Diego-October

September officially marked a year in San Diego for us, and this past month I tried to make an effort to renew our quest to try new spots. It’s so easy to stay in our hood and go to some of our regular spots for a relaxing night out. Speaking of places I don’t mind going to over and over, I shared some of my favorite San Diego spots for a travel guide on Feast + West. Go check out what made my list for Hidden Gems: San Diego.

We did manage to try these new spots in October:

Food

Water Grill

Water Grill San Diego

Their space is beautiful, I loved it as soon as I walked in. Very open and airy. The oysters were very yummy and I enjoyed the wedge salad I ordered. The wedge salad was HUGE. I’ve had better, but this one was solidly good. Shannon’s shrimp and grits were excellent, though I wish they had a touch more spice. I will certainly go back to try out dinner and maybe a cocktail 🙂

Brother’s Provisions

Brothers Provisions

Oh my this was quite the find! It was SO SO good, and I want to go back 🙂 Both our sandwiches were amazing. I want to try all their sandwich options. They have an interesting menu and quality ingredients. Also while an order at the counter place, the inside was nicely appointed and lots of seating.

CounterPoint

Counterpoint San Diego

We tried it out for brunch and were impressed. The bologna sandwich was a nice surprise too, don’t see very many of those in San Diego, and it was good. I really enjoyed my Chicken & Waffles Benedict, best seasoned fried chicken I’ve had! Even if the hollandaise looks a bit wonky, it still tasted good.

Bracero

Bracero Little Italy San Diego

This is a fairly new addition to the Little Italy food scene, that has gotten a ton of buzz from articles and foodie groups.

We tried:

  • Surf and Turf Oysters: beef tartare over an oyster, and it was amazing! The oysters were so good!
  • Beef Tongue Confit taco: meh, I wasn’t overly impressed, it wasn’t hot enough, lukewarm, and the corn tortilla was a bit damp. P though said he really liked it. I didn’t find it had a whole lot of flavor.
  • Shrimp and Bone Marrow Sopa: OMG this was the BEST dish. I’ve never had anything like this before and it’s hard to describe. It was basically shrimp in a bone marrow (sauce) over a very yummy cake (maybe corn not sure what it was made up of).
  • Crispy Corn Masa Egg: This dish was excellent too, very flavorful. I wasn’t sure about potato foam, but it was salty and yummy, not overly earthy. All the components of the dish worked beautifully.
  • Grilled Octopus: cooked perfectly, it was tender. Though I feel like the smoke overwhelmed the whole dish and the components did not really come together like the shrimp and masa egg dishes, but it was still good.

We also ordered a few cocktails, which were both great, well balanced. They offer quite a few craft Mexican beers, and wines from Baja, it’s nice they have wine and beer that reflect the menu. If you are smoke sensitive at all, request with your reservation to not be seated near the upstairs kitchen. The smoke from the kitchen was overwhelming upstairs, we came home and my hair smelled. That was really a turn-off for me. I enjoyed our waiter, and he was very personable. However, I did not feel like the service was that smooth, we waited quite a while between finishing and ordering our next dishes, water service was ok but not great, and I felt like there were lots of staff standing around. Dishes came out basically all together, which was fine for us, but if you were at a table with ordering lots of dishes this may be an issue. I feel like their service could be refined to be a really great dining experience, but we will certainly be back for the food.

Smoking Goat

Smoking Goat San Diego

I had high hopes for this place. So many people recommended it, but I was not impressed. This was one of the worst prepared ducks I’ve had, so disappointed. The other food was ok, but nothing special. We may try it again for their happy hour and get just appetizers, but I would not go back for entrees. They just are not worth the price. The escargot and soup were the best part of the meal.

Booze

The Homebrewer

The Homebrewer San Diego

This is where P buys his home brew supplies, but we had yet to try their beer so we finally corrected that. I really liked that they offered a few single malt, single hop beers, because it is neat to see what those single ingredients produce. The seating is very limited, it’s more pop in for a sample and pop out. Not really a hang out kind of set-up.

O’Sullivan Brothers Brewing

O'Sullivan Brothers Brewing

Very standard American style beers, that are well done. I prefer just a bit more innovative offerings, but their beers were well made. Tight space, but they were friendly and had a fair amount of seating available, and it was kind of neat to seat so close to the “action”.

Division 23 Brewing

Division 23 Brewing San Diego

Overall ok beer, but could use some refining.  The IPA we tried was really off, but the brown and porter were good. The space is a bit dark, but fairly large with friendly bar staff and plenty of seating.

Other

Kayaking with P. I went prior with Shannon, and P wanted to try it out. We did the same provider as the one I did before, using Everyday California. It was good, though a bit boring as it was the same information/show as the first time around. They are really big on group participation and it was a little hard to pay attention when they ask the group the same questions that I already know. It was a nice day, and I did get in the water this time. We actually got rained out of our first scheduled tour and went back the next weekend.

We dressed up for the first time as a couple for a Halloween party! I forgot to take pictures before we left for the party, so this is the only one I have. We had a fun night out!

M + P Halloween 2015

I made this little beauty at Pigment with Esther. It was a fun little afternoon activity, though I feel like the customer service could have been vastly approved upon.

Discovering San Diego August/September

October 6, 2015 by Mariah 16 Comments

Discovering-San-Diego-August-&-September-2015
September marked one year since we have moved to San Diego! The time has flown by and we have barely scratched the surface of what San Diego (and surrounding area) has to offer. August and September were by far the slowest months we have had to-date in terms of seeking out new adventures around town. August I wasn’t surprised about since we had two weekends were were out of town, but September was a bit unexpected. With the move and then me being sick, we basically only had one weekend where I felt like getting out and then I was pushing to make sure 100% of the house things have been taken care of. So, this Discovering San Diego post will be the shortest one I’ve had. We plan on getting back to it in October, we have to make up for lost time 🙂 I debated whether or not I’m going to keep up with the series, I decided I do want to. I like being able to look back and see all we have done, plus it keeps us trying new places 🙂

Food

Krakatoa
Krakatoa San Diego
A hidden gem, tucked away in Golden Hill, a sandwich shop/coffee shop. They have a great outdoor area, and their sandwiches are tasty. This is a place we will definitely go back to, and I have (as I took Shannon one day). Just very casual spot to drop in and grab a sandwich. I want to go back and try a coffee drink one of these days too.

Big Kitchen Cafe
Big Kitchen Cafe San Diego
The Big Kitchen Cafe shows up on a ton of lists for best breakfast, and usually seems quite busy all the times we have driven by. We finally decided to give it a go one morning before heading off on a hike. It’s very diner in feel. I wasn’t blown away by our dishes. I liked our breakfast at Antique Row Cafe better, for a diner type breakfast. I had sausage and gravy and wasn’t impressed with the biscuit or the gravy. P’s omelet was not well balanced with stuffing, and had WAY too much spinach. That was all I could taste. With that said, I still want to return and try their pancakes, which I was lusting over from afar. I have a feeling those might the item to order. Also, the waitstaff was nice and the owner was there, making sure everyone felt welcomed.

Rustic Root
Rustic Root San Diego
Newish spot in the Gaslamp District. Good, but not blown away. The egg was overcooked on my biscuit and I just wasn’t wowed overall. We still want to try it for dinner though and their cocktails look really good.

Shorehouse Kitchen (Brunch)
Shorehouse Kitchen La Jolla
So good!! This is one of the better brunches we have had in town. Spot on flavors and interesting menu. I highly recommend the Crispy Parmesan Risotto & Honey Cured Bacon Benedict (we have had it on two visits). This place gets busy fast, no reservations, so I suggest you aim for earlier morning. Despite them being busy, we have found the hostess and servers extremely friendly.

Kiko’s Place Food Truck

All this for under $5! They never disappoint. #discoveringsandiego #foodtruck #sandiego #lunch #fishtacos #ceviche

Not a restaurant, but our neighborhood fish taco truck. I’m mentioning this here, because they fed us probably for half the month. Seriously good fish tacos, and for $1.75. How crazy is that?! I’m sure you are thinking it can’t be that good, but it is. Always fresh and hot, also they almost always have a line going, so it’s popular. I get the fish taco and shrimp ceviche ($3.00), sometimes the ceviche is better than others, but you can’t get better “fast food”. They park at the convenience store on Texas and Meade.

Booze

Ballast Point Tasting Room (Little Italy)
Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen Little Italy
Ok I’ve been here a number of times, we even went on our househunting trip, however I have never mentioned it in a Discovering San Diego post! So, I am righting that wrong and we even ordered lunch so I had the food+beer to talk about. I really like the Little Italy tasting room, I love that they almost always have a good selection of R&D beers available, beers I can’t find at the store or our local bars. Service is always friendly and it’s a great spot to grab a beer. Their food has been good too, this is the first time we got sandwiches, and I was not disappointed.

Bay City Brewing
Bay City Brewing Co
Oh my, hardest to find brewery in San Diego 🙂 This is tucked away on a one way street, we ended up cutting through the casino parking lot. I would recommend looking this up and look at the map before heading over. Even though I wasn’t really feeling drinking when we went, I still thought all their beers were good. Which is saying something. It was so hot and I just was not 100%.

Border X Tasting Room
Border X Brewing San Diego
This is the transitional neighborhood of Barrio Logan. Really friendly service and patrons, the beer was good. Some were better than others, but overall a good offering.

Cellar 3
Cellar 3 San Diego
This is Green Flash’s dedicated sour and barrel-aged production tasting room/brewery. It was very cool, in addition to a great list of rare sour/barrel-aged offerings, they also offer some Alpine and Green Flash brews. And they have their own food truck (what?!). Super impressed with the cheese and meat board and the deviled eggs. Really great quality of products and I’m sure their sandwiches would be tasty too. This is one I know we will seek out again. Nice outdoor space, but not a huge about of seating.

Other

Baseball Game

Baseball Game San Diego
Thanks to Shannon’s invite, we finally made it to a Padres game! We had a great time. The ballpark has a great beer selection, and I really enjoyed my hotdog and nachos. I’m so glad we got the opportunity to go, and such good seats!! It’s a nice ballpark, and it did feel overly crowded.

Hiking

We made it to the other trail in Torrey Pines, which I will do a separate post on. I enjoyed the first trails we did on our first trip to Torrey Pines more though.

San Diego has treated us well this year! When are you coming to visit? 🙂

Farewell Alabama Street

Farewell-Alabama-Street

This month we moved to a new house, same neighborhood, because we like our hood, just a different house. I wanted to do a little post on our first house in San Diego. I like looking back at the one I did for the Raleigh house, it’s a nice little memento. Plus I love when people give us a little peek inside their houses 🙂 I really can’t believe we have been in San Diego for a year! It does not feel like a year to me AT ALL. Crazy! You know what else is crazy? How bad these pictures are, sorry peeps! This is why you should probably not shoot with no plan, download them, and not take a look until you want to do the post. However, I will not be deterred from posting to the internet, must solider forward 🙂 Avert your eyes if you must.

So, we are total rent-oholics and can’t stay in one place for too long. This house was almost perfect, and was very nicely and newly refinished. BUT, it wasn’t quite right. The major downsides were: It did not have a fenced in yard, and it was on a shared lot (which you can’t tell from the picture, but people lived below us, however they were nice neighbors). Basically, P decided he wanted to take a look at what was out there, next thing you know we have viewing appointments, and boom we are moving.

Here is a little look at the place we lived our first year in San Diego:

So you walk into a long open room. Living room to the left, dining area/kitchen to the right. I staged NOTHING, I just walked around snapping pictures willy-nilly, not even bothering to straighten or fluff, nor turn off the tv, or move Sam’s bed 🙂

Also, Sam followed me around as I snapped the pictures. He wanted his two-minutes 🙂

Messy office to the left of the living room.

Guest room and second bath to the left of the tv. Also, I’m treating this tour like 1950’s sitcom and no bathroom pics 🙂

I loved how open the layout out was of the kitchen/dining/living room. Lots of light too.

SD-House-1-Kitchen-#2 SD-House-1-Kitchen

Almost too much light in the bedroom! A little note on the tv, it resided in the office until one sick day and P moved it to the bedroom for me, and it never made it’s way back. We rarely watch tv in the bedroom. Once in a year it was turned on.

Not pictured the bathroom and closet in our bedroom.

I loved our palm tree out front. And below is Pagie, the neighborhood cat, that always hung out on our porch and everyone assumed it was our non-taken care of cat. She was just old, she was literally feed by the whole neighborhood. Very very sweet kitty. But Eddie’s an only child kind of cat, he tolerates the dog. We did not mind the extra company though.

Well, thanks for suffering through the terrible picture taking!! At least I included some animals pictures, right 🙂

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park: Green Valley Loop

August 26, 2015 by Mariah 7 Comments

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Green Valley Loop
This hike started in the Green Valley Campground, at the Arroyo Seco Picnic Area.  I’m calling it the Green Valley Loop, which was what I found on Alltrails.com, but it is a combination of a few trails together to make the loop, and we did it a bit different than the original poster on alltrails. This is the best hike so far!! OMG guys this hike was AWESOME. The views were stunning and abundant, and talk about solitude. We did not encounter any other hikers at all. The whole 3 hours was just P and me, and the wind.

To make the loop we started at the Green Valley Campground, at the Arroyo Fire Road. This goes to the Horse Camp, and right after the camp, pick up the Arroyo Seco Trail. Do not take the Fox Trail, you will miss most of the views. Then pick up the West Mesa, to the Monument Trail, which will return you to the parking lot you started in.

I loved this hike, it was challenging, but so beautiful. The hike up was much, much more engaging than the hike down. This felt the most like a hike than any of our other adventures. The trail was very varied, going from fire road, to narrow, to grass covered, to rocky. The down part of this hike was very challenging. It required all your focus as it was extremely rocky. Honestly, I felt fine the whole hike until about halfway down, and my legs felt like jello and my ankles were complaining. It was just so hard to walk on the trail being SO rocky (see last picture below), that was pretty much the whole trail down.

While the Hollenbeck Canyon felt desolate, this felt serene. It was very peaceful and the view could not be beat. I loved it. The top was quite windy, we went when it was in the 80s. On a cooler day I’m sure you would need long-sleeves or jacket. There was quite a bit of grassy, grown in bits of the trail, so you may want to consider pants. We both had on shorts, and I did not come away with scratches, though I was a bit worried about ticks. We didn’t find any so I guess we got lucky 🙂

Other than the downhill challenge this hike was the BEST!!! P and I want to go back and do the longer Burnt Pine section of the trail.

Notes

  • Bug repellent is needed, the lower part of the trail was quite fly/gnat ridden.
  • Hiking shoes, honestly I don’t think we would have made it down in tennis shoes. You needed the stiffer soles.
  • Sunscreen & hat
  • Plenty of water
  • $8 cash for parking
  • It’s about a 45 minute drive to get to Cuyamaca Park from San Diego.
  • Make sure you have gas before HWY 79.
  • This hike was 6 miles.
