Blogging How To: Coding Social Media Buttons

November 24, 2014 by Mariah 7 Comments

How-to-Code-Your-Social-Media-Buttons

I’m bringing something to you guys from left-field today, a blogging how to!! As I just passed the one-year mark I thought it was about time I’ve shared a few things I’ve learned. One of my pet peeves when reading blogs are links that don’t open into new windows, I hate when I click on a link and the page I’m reading gets replaced. HATE IT! For the longest time my social media buttons did just that. It did not occur to me to simply “Google” how to fix said problem, until I took a coding class. Whether you are new or old to blogging, I highly recommend taking a HTML and CSS class. Do I think you need to learn to code your whole site? No, but learning the basic concepts of how the pieces fit together to run your blog is SO helpful and makes tackling small changes much less scary. Today, I’m sharing how to make your social media links open into their own windows. It’s so simple!

To get your links to open in a new window, you just need to add the code:

target="_blank"

This code will make any link open in a new window, not just your social media buttons. 🙂 Of course when you are linking within your post it is much easier to just check the “open in new window” box when you use the link tool.

Link tool

Since I use WordPress I’m detailing that process. Regardless of your platform you should be able to find your social media coding and add this snippet of code into the same place in that string of code.

Go to Appearance →Widgets

Appearance Widgets

Find your social media widget and add in target=”_blank” after your destination code (where the clicked link leads to).

Widget Used for Social Media

Here is the code used to link to my Twitter account:

<a href="https://twitter.com/foodboozebags" target="_blank" ><img title="Twitter" src="http://www.foodboozeandbaggage.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Twitter.png" alt="" width="45" height="45"/>

Prior to adding in the new code it looked like:

<img title="Twitter" src="http://www.foodboozeandbaggage.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Twitter.png" alt="" width="45" height="45"/>

You will need to add this code to each of your social media code lines:

Social Media Widget

If you are completely new to blogging and do not have social media buttons yet, you can easily add them:

1. Upload your social media icon files

Add New Media

2. Go to Appearance →Widgets

Appearance Widgets

Drag the “Text” widget over to the right-hand side, under your sidebar

Text Widget

Widget Used for Social Media

3. Name the Text Widget whatever you want to. Mine is “Connect”, you may want to name your’s “Get Social” or “Stalk Me”…whatever. What you put in the “Title” field, will show on your sidebar.

Text Widget Title

4. Now add in the code! Just copy and paste the below, and add in your information to the areas in red. The width and height settings are up to you, depending on how large or small you want your icons.

<img title="Twitter" src="http://www.foodboozeandbaggage.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Twitter.png" alt="" width="45" height="45"/>

The href should be the url that the button opens to.

Twitter Account

Img Title should be what you are linking to or what you want people to see when they hover over the button.

Img Alt

The src should be the url that links to your uploaded image

File URL

5. Save to see it displayed on your page!

6. Now do this for each of your social media buttons by copying the code to the next line in the same widget and updating the information accordingly.

Do your social media buttons open in a new window?

3rd Qtr Report (2013-2014)

August 28, 2014 by Mariah 10 Comments

_3rd-Qtr-Report-Food-Booze-&-Baggage

It’s a very belated 3rd Quarter Report! Lucky for me I’m my own boss or otherwise I might be in trouble 😉 I did think about skipping this quarter and summing it all up in the 4th quarter but that just gets confusing…plus it is a bit dishonest as part of why I would skip is because I did not make very much progress and that’s not fair. I like being able to see my progress (good or bad), and I like these posts. If you are interested here is 1 and 2. If you are wondering why I included design as part of the report, I explain that in report 2.

One thing that struck me this quarter was the socializing aspect of the blog and I began to really feel part of the community. The post Life Lessons From Blogging sums up some of that. I felt that I’ve made some great connections and I truly appreciate all the support from my fellow bloggers…I still get so giddy and excited when someone else mentions one of my posts.

This quarter has been very up and down in terms of me keeping up with the blog. I feel so positive about the blog but I feel a bit more like the blog is running me as opposed to me running the blog…I felt like I was trying to play catch-up a lot and chasing after topics. I want to be more focused with my topics moving forward and have a better mix of informative versus more personal.

Technology

  • Completed none of my future goals from last quarter…wamp, wamp, wamp 🙂
  • I am really pleased with what I think it such a better quality of picture the DSLR camera provides. Using it for our trip to Maine and the resulting pictures, made me so happy. I think it is really worth the investment for better photos. The pictures are better, even though I’ve invested no real-time in developing any photography skills (it is the camera).

Future Goals

    • Move to a Genesis Frame Theme
    • Learn more about coding
    • Install better commenting system
    • Invest time in learning more about the DSLR camera and photo editing
    • Install custom pin-it button

Social

  • Started The School of Life link-up with Shannon (Brass Honey) & Miriam (Farm Girl). Currently, the link-up is on a hiatus and honestly the three of us have not discussed its future…which of course is not exactly how you run a link-up but things happen 🙂 I think once a week was a bit too much for me but maybe when “real” life is a bit more settled I won’t think that. This is going in the “to be determined” action item folder. I do want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our fellow bloggers who did participate and helped to promote it…it meant so much to me.
  • Link-ups participated in: Humpday Confessions, Travel Tuesday, Local Adventurer, Foodie Pen Pal
  • Placed two ads: Another Clean Slate (May) and Vodka and Soda (July)
  • Received 3 Liebsters and a Q&A
  • Won earrings from Esther and Jacob’s blog…aren’t they cute!! They are super light too, which I love!

  • Participated in my second giveaways, as part of my Nectar Collective ad that ran April-May. For that one I did Pinterest and Twitter…which I should have done Bloglovin. I did not document the increase I got through participating, I forgot to set a reminder but it would be safe to say that on both I got an increase of at least 50 followers (probably more).

Future Goals

    • Start Google + (I have an account but don’t really use it…need to get on that)
    • Continue to grow Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram
    • Continue to search out new link-up opportunities
    • Continue to work on connecting and promoting other bloggers
    • Look for other sponsorship opportunities
    • Share new boards on Pinterest

Blogging

  • I’m happy I started the Beer 101 posts, I’m proud of those.
  • I talked one of my real life friends into contributing and loved getting to share her voice and story.
  • I shared our trip to Maine and Charleston (finally) and an announcement that will move us to the other side of the country

Future Goals

    • Work more on writing and developing voice
    • Look into joining a blogging network
    • Work towards banking posts
    • Do more with childfree topic/connection
    • Look into monetization
    • Re-do About Page

Design

  • CompletedtheseSkillshare courses (I’ve completed all of the sessions but not all the projects):
    • Color on the Web I: Design Cohesive Palettes by Geri Coady
    • The Art of Typography: Communicate Effectively Through the Power of Type by Faye Brown
    • Logo Design: New Ways to Create Custom Vintage Type by Simon Walker~this one I did not find particularly informative in technique or theory
    • Master the Basics of Illustrator to Create Awesome Illustrations by Julian Burford~I think the Illustrator classes by Brad Woodard are much more instructive, but it is nice to see the different techniques. I don’t think this one is detailed enough for a true beginner of Illustrator.

All of the above classes are membership classes; you can take them if you sign up for the membership without having to pay per class. ***All of the links for Skillshare are referral links meaning if you sign up I get a free month and you can too, I do not have any affiliation with Skillshare, this is an offer to all users.

  • Continued work on creating a new logo and brand identity for the blog.
  • I’m working through the project steps from Courtney’s Skillshare class. I also started working on custom social media buttons.

Future Goals

    • Finish logo for blog
    • Design blog badge
    • Design button for “Childfree Are We Page”
    • Design Social Media Icons
    • Have a few pictures taken of me for blogging/promotion purposes
    • Continue working on Skillshare courses

Numbers

The new numbers are May 8th-August 6th to make exactly 90 days, even though this post is SO VERY LATE. I’ve included the 1st & 2nd quarter figures for comparison. I’ve also included totals. I do not look at these numbers on a daily basis, honestly I should probably look at them a bit more. The numbers are the numbers good, bad, whatever…it is progress. I don’t obsess over them, but I love to see growth because they shows me that I’m getting something for what I’m putting out, and who doesn’t like that. Honestly, what I do notice for every post are the comments. I think comments are a great way to see your engagement. I did not track comments this year since I use to comment directly on the blog and didn’t want to go back and figure out how many were my responses. Next year I may add comments to the number tracking.

3rd Qtr Report by the Numbers (13-14)

I have a lot of work to do and progress to make, but I’m pretty happy with what I’ve done so far.

Thank you all for your continued support and for being here!!

In other blogging news:  The Lady Okie has a series Blog Talk that has great engagement and is a neat way to peek inside the minds of fellow bloggers.

2nd Qtr Report (2013-2014)

May 9, 2014 by Mariah 19 Comments

2nd-Qtr-Report-of-Food-Booze-&-Baggage

Welcome to the Second Quarterly Report of Food, Booze, & Baggage. This marks 6 months of blogging for little ol me. The last three months have been very up and down. I think I’ve made some really great progress, but I still feel that I have a lot to learn and I’m still in the figuring it out stage. Improvements with reaching out, socializing and commenting, but struggles with writing content and getting posts finalized. You will see below I’ve decided to add a new category to my report, design. As I mentioned in this post about “why I started this blog”, learning new skills is an important part of this space for me. So, I’m going to include what I’ve been doing in that area as well. My biggest stumbling blocks are how to best invest my time and balance the “what I should be doing”, “what needs to be done”, and “what I want to do”.

Technology

  • Got a DSLR camera…now I just need to learn to use it. I’ve used it for this post and this post.
  • Got a Mac, which doesn’t really impact the blog but I was very excited about it 🙂 It does help me squeeze in a little work some mornings because I don’t have to wait forever for it to boot-up. Plus, I can do better screen shots!
  • Started emailing response comments instead of commenting on the page. I feel like there are pros and cons to this. I can’t remember to go back and check posts for new comments, so I don’t expect anyone else to either.

Future Goals

    • Move to a Genesis Frame Theme
    • Learn more about coding
    • Install better commenting system

Social

  • Started an Instagram account.
  • Made progress with commenting and engaging with other bloggers.
  • Found some great link-ups that I enjoy participating in: Humpday Confessions and Travel Tuesday.
  • Placed two ads:  Found Love Now What (March) and The Nectar Collective (April).
  • Won an ad space on Megan’s Blog (Megan Joy Jaunts) in April, which was my first giveaway win!! Woo-Hoo!
  • Participated in my first giveaways, as part of Megan’s sponsorship. The following is the increase of the included social media accounts during the run of the giveaway:
      • Bloglovin: 34 to 58
      • Pinterest: 20 to 50
      • Twitter: 75 to 107
  • Started using Buffer to schedule posts for Twitter.

Future Goals

    • Start Google +
    • Continue to grow Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram
    • Continue to search out new link-up opportunities
    • Continue to work on connecting and promoting other bloggers
    • Look for other sponsorship opportunities

Blogging

  • Completed the Let’s Fly Away Series, checking off #4 on the 101 list.
  • Finished my Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine Series: it was an important topic to me and I’m really happy I shared it.
  • Stopped posting on a “regular” schedule, with the aim of posting 3 times a week but not on particular days with particular topics. While, I completely understand the logic behind the schedule posting it just was not working for me.

Future Goals

    • Work more on writing and developing voice
    • Look into joining a blogging network
    • Work towards banking posts
    • Do more with childfree topic/connection

Design

  • Completed these Skillshare courses (I’ve completed all of the sessions but not all the projects):
    • Basics of Photoshop: Fundamentals for Beginners by Meg Lewis
    • Learn the Ins and Outs of Illustrator by Brad Woodard
    • Beyond the Logo: Crafting a Brand Identity by Courtney Eliseo
    • Reign Repeats: Create Perfect Repeat Patterns in Illustrator by MaJo Bautista~this one had so much “extra” training material for learning Illustrator. She goes through every tool on the left tool-bar. It’s a great class for learning about Illustrator not just patterns.
    • Photoshop for Blogging: Creating Collages by Erin Lizardo~Not much new material than what I already learned in the class by Meg. One great tip was the GuideGuide extension which makes creating a grid so easy! It is good to take classes on the same program from different instructors, because there are so many ways to go about tasks in the Adobe programs, it is nice to learn the different approaches.
    • Illustrate Your Day: An Intro to Symbol Design by the Noun Project~ I want to go back and do this project.
    • Basic Geometric Shapes: Illustrate a Series of Icons or Badges by Dominic Flask~ Another one I want to go back and work on.

I have a few other classes started but not completed, I will share those next time, along with those I complete from my very long “want” list. 🙂 All of the above classes are membership classes; you can take them if you sign up for the membership without having to pay per class. ***All of the links for Skillshare are referral links meaning if you sign up I get a free month and you can too, I do not have any affiliation with Skillshare, this is an offer to all users.

  • Used Photoshop or Illustrator to create graphics such as– 1, 2,  3, 4 but would like to do more.
  • Started work on creating a new logo and brand identity for the blog. I’m working through the project steps from Courtney’s Skillshare class.

Future Goals

    • Finish logo for blog
    • Design several ad badges
    • Design button for “Childfree Are We Page”
    • Design Social Media Icons
    • Have a few pictures taken of me for blogging/promotion purposes
    • Continue working on Skillshare courses

Numbers

The new numbers are February 6th-May 7th to make exactly 90 days, even though this post is a few days after. I’ve included the 1st quarter figures for comparison. I’ve also included totals. I’m going to repeat a bit of my 1st Quarter spiel here:  I’m excited by every new visitor and really excited about every new follow or comment. I think some of the best advice when starting a blog is: 1. just start  2. don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. This is a way for me to keep track of my progress.

Food Booze & Baggage 2nd Qtr Report

At the end of the day I wish I had more time to commit to the blog and learning design skills. P continues to be amazingly supportive of my endeavors; it truly amazes me how supportive and encouraging he is. I’m trying to do better in balancing my time, and being more focused on the present and enjoying what is in front of me, and sometimes that means having to let the blog slip a bit. I love this space and I’m very committed to continuing to work towards its growth, I just have to find a good balance. I think one of the biggest things that helped me with the rut, I began to feel with the blog, was letting the “rules” go. Do what works best for you; following the “rules” is not a guarantee for success, so therefore not following the “rules” does not mean you will fail either.

Thank you all for your continued support and for being here!!

If you could share just one blogging tip, what would it be?

1st Qtr Report (2013-2014)

February 7, 2014 by Mariah 14 Comments

90 days of blogging

Happy Friday!! This week marks 3 months since my first blog post. So, I’ve decided to do a little quarterly report…sounds really exciting right…well too bad, it’s my blog and I do what I want 🙂 No, just kidding, please don’t leave. Honestly, I’m still trying to figure it all out. So far it has been fun, and I’ve connected with some great bloggers. I love all the feedback and comments and I’m so appreciative of everyone who has taken time to read my posts. I still have a lot to learn and do, but I feel so motivated to keep it up and I hope you will continue this journey with me.

Beginner via Food, Booze, & Baggage

I got this idea when writing an email to a fellow blogger about page visits, but the thing is I have no idea what a good benchmark should be. I’m excited by every new visitor and really excited about every new follow or comment. I think some of the best advice when starting a blog is: 1. just start it 2. don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. This is a way for me to keep track of my progress.

Technology

  • Moved from wordpress.com to a self-hosted wordpress.org (hosted on BlueHost)
  • I lost all subscribers and likes in the move process, but not the comments. When I decided to move I had only done a few posts and didn’t feel it was worth it to pay for the move. I wish I had researched my platform better.
  • There has been a number of glitches figuring out the whole WordPress thing, but I’ve been learning and that is important to me.
  • There are a number of things I still want to do, but it is a process and the tech side is not a priority right now.
  • These blogs have some great tips:
    • Studio 404  (honestly I found tons of other good sites through Angel’s roundups)
    • XO Sarah
    • Lovely Indeed
    • Chasing Happy

Social

  • I met some great bloggers!
  • I’m so thankful for all the support, both from new online friends and my at home family and friends. I’m particularly thankful for connecting with Shannon from Brass Honey so early on – she has been amazing!
  • January was the first month that I really focused on putting myself out there and trying to be more social, and it has been great both for me and the blog.
  • I started Twitter just for the blog and I’m glad I did it…and I think you should too 🙂
  • I participated in several link-ups in January. Link-ups are  good opportunities to put yourself out there and helps in finding your blog “tribe” 🙂 Doing these have definitely helped increase blog traffic and comments.
  • The Liebster Award (thanks again Brass Honey) was a great opportunity and really allowed me to connect to some new bloggers (The Fit Knitter  and Damn Ten Pounds– I’m calling you out on this one)
  • I’m currently following through Feedly, but thinking about going back to Bloglovin (this will be a future post). In the meantime, don’t think I don’t follow you just because I don’t show up on Bloglovin. I worry about this.

Blogging

  • My favorite post is “Life without Mile Markers” – especially the comments it received
  • The comments from the above lead me to start the “Childfree Are We” page, and I’m so excited when I get to add new bloggers to it
  • I wrote this post on why I started this blog
  • I’m never going to be a food blogger but I’m going to continue with my Sunday food posts because: I like to share our recipes, I think eating cleaner is important, and I felt for a long time in the dark about how to figure out meals and what people eat. If I can do it, anyone can.
  • I’m going to keep using the blog as practice for my design lessons in Illustrator and Photoshop (this and this are examples)…brace yourselves for more.
  • I struggle to keep up with the 3 posts a week schedule but I’m committed. It’s my dream to get a month of posts together in advance.

Numbers

This may be really stupid and/or weird but I’m just diving right in. We will have to blame this on the ENTJ personality. While I don’t think you should run your blog for numbers, and it is really not the most important aspect of blogging for me, it is undeniably part of blogging. I want to know how I’m doing, and I think this and comments are the feedback for that. The thing is, I have no idea if these numbers are considered decent or dismissal. So here goes:

November 6, 2013 to February 5, 2014

Unique Visitors: 583
Visits: 1,087
Pageviews: 2,428
Bloglovin: 12
Facebook: 12
Twitter: 42
Email Subscribers: 9

Thank-you
